As the Mental Health Director, you will play a vital role in supporting the overall well-being of children, families, and staff across our Head Start centers. This position is critical to ensuring that children are not only prepared academically, but also socially and emotionally, to thrive in school and in life.

The Mental Health Director will:

  • Provide guidance and support to staff in addressing children’s behavioral and developmental needs.
  • Ensure classrooms are trauma-informed and supportive of children’s social-emotional growth.
  • Partner with families to connect them with resources, strategies, and services.
  • Strengthen staff resilience and well-being by offering professional development, consultation, and access to mental health supports.

This leadership role is key to creating safe, nurturing environments that promote healthy child development, meet Head Start Performance Standards, and ensure every child is given the opportunity to succeed.

Schedule: Monday - Friday,  Full-time, 40 hours a week-Exempt Position

This position is a hybrid position, a combination of at-home and in-office to allow for flexibility of duties as this position will require traveling to our center in Pagosa Springs, Durango, and Cortez. Mileage reimbursement is available per policy. 

Salary: The wage range is $73,741.41 to $77,383.49 annually

Position Summary: Responsible for program compliance with performance standards related to disabilities and mental health for Head Start and Early Head Start, ages 0 – 5, as well as assisting classroom staff with referrals and services for disabilities, developmental delays, and behavioral health concerns. This position is responsible for ensuring a program-wide multidisciplinary approach and goals for the promotion, prevention, and intervention of mental health for children, families, and staff.  

Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate has:  

  • Demonstrated experience working with young children and their families.
  • Strong knowledge of early childhood development principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in providing consultative support to staff and families.
  • Familiarity with community-based mental health and family support resources.
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully within diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. 
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from families, directors, paraprofessionals, teachers, or development specialists. 
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. 
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. 
  • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision.  
  • Ability to work as part of a team and recognize when teamwork is required.
  • Good interpersonal communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Working knowledge of personal computers, database programs, the internet, and email systems.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree in a Mental Health Field, and a minimum of 1 year prior related experience. 
  • Must be a licensed or certified mental health professional with at least 2 years of post master degree experience in infant mental health, early childhood, and Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (IECMHC). 
    • Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs)
    • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs)
    • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
